The Art of Saying No in December

Because your time and energy are worth protecting

Did you get the memo? December is coming at us fast with school parties, holiday gatherings, work events, and endless to-do lists. And while it’s tempting to say yes to everything, the truth is you cannot be everywhere and do everything without running yourself ragged.

Here’s how to reclaim your month with confidence, calm, and a little bit of sass.

1. Know Your Limits

Before you even pick up your calendar, decide how many social events, extra tasks, or volunteer commitments you realistically want to take on this month. Write them in your My Motherhood Agenda so it’s tangible.

2. Prioritize What Truly Matters

Not every holiday cookie exchange or office party needs your presence. Decide what matters most to you and your family. Those are the events you say yes to; everything else gets a polite pass.

3. Practice Your “No”

Keep it simple. “Thank you for thinking of me, I won’t be able to make it” is enough. No excuses required. Your time is valuable and people will understand.

4. Protect Your Daily Rhythm

When you say yes too often, your routines suffer. Keep your morning or evening rituals sacred — even ten minutes of coffee in silence or a walk around the block counts. Your energy fuels everything else.

5. Schedule a “Me Moment”

Block out a small piece of time just for you; a bath, a book, a nap. Write it in your Mom Agenda and treat it like any other appointment. Saying no to some things allows you to say yes to yourself.

December does not have to feel like a sprint. Saying no strategically gives you space for what really matters: family, connection, joy, and a little holiday magic without the overwhelm.
